Please read my prior reviews on the other Fear Street films for this one to make some more sense but do what you want to do.
If you haven't read my previous two posts about Fear Street, this series is based on a book series of the same name and written by the Author of the iconic Goosebumps series of horror novels made for middle schoolers, R.L. Stine and while I have not read the books, I do enjoy the series to a degree. For me, the best film in the trilogy that's currently a Netflix original is part two:1978 with part one following it and this final film being dead last (no pun intended).
Fear Street 1666 is by far the worst in the series as it's a TWO HOUR info dump with some odd and jarring time jumps and visuals that don't make sense and is by far my least favorite of the films. This is a flashback based film about the witch who placed the curse over Shady Side and it's residents, Sarah Fier and how she became the spooky satanic witch that stops people from progressing or finding enlightenment in Shady Side living.
We see the cast from both films act as completely different characters in the flashback to 1666 (because of course its 666) and our actress from Deena in the first film portrays Sarah Fier herself and while her acting wasn't the worst part of the first film, its pretty dang terrible in this one. Everyone has the stereotypical English accent that all period pieces have for settlers in early America but Deena's is so bad that it's just flat out funny. You know what, this film is funny because it's so bad, in my opinion. The production design is fine and the twists in the plot are ok but it's just bad all around.
There's not much more I can say about this film but I guess I'll still add in a spoilers section here.
So the twist that Sarah Fier wasn't actually a witch or had anything to do with the actual curse from the entirety of the series was an ok plot twist and I like that Nick Goode's ancestors (Nick Goode being the golden boy son of the town's sheriff and the good boy of the series) were the people who blamed Sarah Fier for the curse and basically went unnoticed for centuries until Deena and Ziggy figured it out in 1994. Nick Goode being the villain of the whole series was really cool but I feel like it wasn't built up in the last films where you could go back and see the parts that didn't make sense prior to watching this film and listening to the info dump and villain monologue and pick apart the little hints. There were no hints and it was just rewriting the plot with the villain monologue and I did NOT enjoy that part.
There are also two time jumps in the film that are really jarring. One is from where 1978 leaves off and Deena and Ziggy team up to save Deena's girlfriend from the curse and then we jump WAYYYYYYY back all of a sudden to 1666 where all the previous cast are now playing completely different characters but look exactly the same and have chronic iPhone face. Then we spent about 1.5 hours in 1666 and then suddenly were in 1994 again ending the curse. It's so jarring and I swear I get whiplash watching that climax unfold. It's also such an unrewarding end to the series and the curse and it's just boring and stupid in all honesty.
I give this infodump boring period witch hunt 1990's slasher mess a 4/10. The 4 points are for visuals since some are cool and some aren't, most acting is ok and the music is fine.
